As I continued through The Conscious Closet by Elizabeth Cline, I have learned a lot more about how to maintain a sustainable lifestyle and keep a sustainable closet. This week, I read a lot about second hand shops and why resale rules. There are an abundance of reasons why people love resale and thrift stores, it’s cheap, adds a scavenger hunt element to it and is helpful to the environment!
Someone who epitomizes ethical style is Emma Watson. She is a conscious activist who has a sustainable closet and lifestyle. I can learn a few things from her and the way in which she dresses herself. The first is that while it may be hard, it is important to dedicate yourself to the cause. I can also learn from her that stylish and beautiful things can be second hand.
There is also a guide to thrift and shop like a pro. This was extremely helpful to me because this week I went to my first thrift shop. This combined with my clothing was my first pool of apparel to start my designs. I found an old pair of shorts at a Durham thrift shop that I attempted to pair with a cut up pin striped top.
I have learned a lot about my design process as well. I find that it is easier to be inspired by the clothing rather than come up with ideas before. At a thrift shop, you never know what you are going to find. I at first used Pinterest for inspiration, focusing a lot on denim. However, when I went to my first thrift shop there was not much to choose from. Instead I took the clothes and thought of different styles that I could put together.
